Chemical Name: AMPRENAVIR (am-PREN-a-veer)
Common uses
This medicine is an HIV protease inhibitor used in combination with other medicines to manage human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
Before using
WARNING: This medicine must be used in combination with other anti-HIV medicines. It is not known how long this drug will benefit those with HIV infection. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking astemizole, bepridil, cisapride, ergot alkaloids, rifampin, terfenadine, midazolam, triazolam or oral contraceptives. Hormonal contraceptives have been found to decrease the amount of amprenavir in the blood. Consult your doctor about other methods of birth control. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking fluticasone, amiodarone, barbiturates, carbamazepine, lidocaine, methadone, phenytoin, rifabutin, sildenafil, sirolimus, tacrolimus, tricyclic antidepressants, quinidine, warfarin, St John's wort, or medicine for high cholesterol (statins) or diabetes. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
Directions
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine comes with a patient information leaflet. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. If you take it with food, do not take it with a high fat meal. Do not take antacids within 1 hour of taking this medicine. DO NOT SWITCH between the capsule and liquid forms of this medicine. They are not equal milligram per milligram. Consult your doctor or pharmacist. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. Do not refrigerate. CONTINUE TO TAKE THIS MEDICINE even if you feel better. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as you remember. If it is within 2 hours of your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. It is important not to miss doses of this medicine. DO NOT TAKE 2 doses at once.
Cautions
IF YOU HAVE HAD A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine or any other sulfonamide medicine (such as Septra DS, Bactrim DS, Gantrisin, glyburide, or probenecid), contact your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine. A severe reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you have a question about whether you are allergic to this medicine or if a certain medicine is a sulfonamide, contact your doctor or pharmacist. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE without checking with your doctor. Exceeding the recommended dose of this medicine may not provide additional benefits, and may increase the risks of side effects. DO NOT STOP USING THIS MEDICINE without first checking with your doctor. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this medicine. Laboratory and/or medical tests such as liver function tests, cholesterol or triglyceride levels, white blood cell counts, and blood sugar levels may be done while you are taking this medicine to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. THIS MEDICINE WILL NOT PREVENT YOU FROM SPREADING HIV. If you have questions concerning how to prevent the spread of HIV, ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. THIS MEDICINE MAY NOT PREVENT OTHER INFECTIONS. If your health changes, check with your doctor. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine. IF YOU HAVE DIABETES, this medicine may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.
Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience rash; tingling around the mouth; depression; or change in mood, emotions, or behavior. Changes in body fat may occur while you are taking this medicine (e.g., increased fat in the upper back and stomach areas, decreased fat in the arms and legs). The cause and long-term effects of these changes are unknown. Discuss the risks and benefits of therapy with your doctor, as well as the possible role of exercise to reduce this side effect. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
Drug interactions
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine from doing its job. Discuss with your doctor or consult with the pharmacist or use a drug interaction checker to find out if your medicines interact with each other.
If you take too much
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Additional information
If you have any questions concerning how to prevent the spreading of HIV, ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
