This medicine is a combination of an insulin resistance reducer and a biguanide used along with a diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in certain diabetic patients. This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Before using
WARNING: The metformin in this combination medicine can rarely cause a very serious, sometimes fatal condition called lactic acidosis. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop unusual tiredness, severe drowsiness, cold skin, muscle pain, rapid breathing or breathing problems, or slow or irregular heartbeat. Stomach symptoms are common when you begin using this medicine. However, if you have been on this medicine for several or more weeks and stomach symptoms reappear, they may be due to lactic acidosis or some other serious condition. Seek immediate medical attention if stomach symptoms or any of these symptoms occur. Lactic acidosis is more likely to occur in patients who consume excessive amounts of alcohol, or in patients who have a history of severe heart problems (such as congestive heart failure, heart attack, or stroke), kidney problems, liver problems, or dehydration problems. The risk for developing lactic acidosis is also increased in patients undergoing x-ray or scanning procedures that require an injectable iodinated contrast drug, patients undergoing surgery, or patients that develop a serious infection (such as sepsis). The elderly are also at higher risk for developing lactic acidosis from this medicine. If you are over 80 years of age and have not had kidney tests and liver function tests, check with your doctor before taking this medicine. THIAZOLIDINEDIONE ANTIDIABETICS SUCH AS THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE OR WORSEN HEART FAILURE IN SOME PATIENTS. Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart failure. This medicine should not be used to treat patients with moderate to severe heart failure. You will be monitored for signs of heart failure when you start this medicine and when your dose increases. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR AT ONCE if you develop swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet; shortness of breath; or sudden, unexplained weight gain. Your doctor may need to stop your medicine or change your dose. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking beta-blockers (such as propranolol), water pills (such as hydrochlorothiazide or furosemide), cimetidine, birth control pills, estrogens, corticosteroids (such as prednisone), niacin, phenytoin, decongestants (such as pseudoephedrine), calcium channel blockers (such as nifedipine), phenothiazines (such as chlorpromazine), medicines for tuberculosis (such as isoniazid or rifampin), anticoagulants (such as warfarin), thyroid medicines, or gemfibrozil. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including blood problems (such as anemia, or vitamin B-12 deficiency), swelling problems, vision or eye problems, ovulation problems, heart problems, liver problems, burns, serious injury or trauma, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have kidney problems, severe liver problems, congestive heart failure, or metabolic acidosis. Use of this medicine is not recommended for type-1, insulin-dependent diabetes or to treat diabetic acidosis. Use of this medicine in children is not recommended. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of giving this medicine to your child. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.

Laboratory and/or medical tests such as liver function tests, kidney function tests, fasting blood sugar, glycosylated hemoglobin (A1C), eye exams, or complete blood counts may be done to check your progress or to monitor for side effects. TELL YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY about the reaction. To prevent hypoglycemia, eat meals on a regular schedule and do not skip meals. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine. FOR WOMEN: this medicine may increase your chance of pregnancy by causing ovulation to resume in women who have not been ovulating. Consult your doctor or pharmacist about the use of reliable birth control while using this medicine. IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. Other therapy may be recommended to control blood sugar during pregnancy. Discuss your treatment options with your doctor. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.
