Chemical Name: ESTRADIOL (es-tra-DYE-ole) and NORETHINDRONE (nor-eth-IN-drone) ACETATE
Common uses
This medicine is a combination of estrogen and progestin hormones used to treat menopausal symptoms (such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness). It is also used to prevent osteoporosis (weak bones) in certain women after menopause. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Before using
THIS MEDICINE SHOULD NOT BE USED TO PREVENT HEART DISEASE, HEART ATTACKS, STROKES, OR DEMENTIA. Estrogens, with or without progestins, have been shown to increase the risk of heart disease (including heart attack), stroke, dementia, serious blood clots (such as in the lungs or legs), cancer of the uterus, and breast cancer in some women. Tell your doctor right away if you have unusual vaginal bleeding while you use this medicine. Talk with your doctor if you have questions about the benefits and risks of using this medicine. THIS MEDICINE SHOULD BE USED FOR THE SHORTEST POSSIBLE TIME AT THE LOWEST EFFECTIVE DOSE TO MINIMIZE THE RISK OF THESE SIDE EFFECTS. Talk with your doctor regularly about your need to use this medicine. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are also taking azole antifungals (such as ketoconazole or itraconazole), barbiturates (such as phenobarbital), beta-blockers (such as propranolol), bosentan, carbamazepine, corticosteroids (such as prednisone), theophylline, griseofulvin, HIV protease inhibitors (such as ritonavir), hydantoins (such as phenytoin), lamotrigine, macrolide antibiotics (such as clarithromycin or erythromycin), penicillin antibiotics (such as amoxicillin), rifampin, St. John's wort, tetracycline antibiotics (such as doxycycline), thyroid hormones (such as levothyroxine), felbamate, modafinil, nevirapine, troglitazone, acitretin, aprepitant, or troleandomycin. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OF ANY OTHER MEDICAL CONDITIONS including tobacco use, being severely overweight, abnormal blood calcium levels, diabetes, or if a member of your family has ever had a blood clot (such as in the lung or leg). TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you have a history of abnormal mammograms or lumps in the breast; asthma; cancer; certain blood problems (such as porphyria); blood vessel problems (such as stroke); fluid retention; heart problems (such as heart attack or congestive heart failure); high blood pressure; high blood cholesterol or lipid levels; lupus; mood or mental problems (such as depression or dementia); migraine headaches; pancreas or gallbladder problems; kidney problems; growths in the liver; seizures; thyroid problems; uterus problems (such as endometriosis, growths in the uterus, or uterine fibroids); endometrial, cervical, or vaginal cancer; yellowing of the eyes or skin due to pregnancy or estrogen use; vision loss; allergies (including corn); pregnancy; or breast-feeding. TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you have had your uterus removed (hysterectomy). USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have liver problems; or if you have a history of blood clots in the lungs, legs, or eyes; breast cancer; estrogen-dependent growths; undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding; recent (within the past year) bleeding in the brain, stroke, or heart attack; or other serious blood vessel problems. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
Directions
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. AN ADDITIONAL PATIENT INFORMATION LEAFLET is available with this medicine. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have before taking this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY BE TAKEN on an empty stomach or with food. WHEN YOU START A NEW DISPENSER of this medicine, turn the inner disc so the current day of the week is lined up with the little plastic tab. TO TAKE THE FIRST TABLET, pull the plastic tab up and break it off. Tip the tablet out of the dispenser. Every day after that, turn the outer transparent dial one space clockwise as shown by the arrow. Tip the tablet for that day out of the dispenser. GRAPEFRUIT OR GRAPEFRUIT JUICE may increase the risk of this medicine's side effects. Talk with your doctor before including grapefruit or grapefruit juice in your diet. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C), away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Take this medicine regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking this medicine at the same time each day will help you to remember. CONTINUE TO TAKE THIS MEDICINE even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. DO NOT take 2 doses at once.
Cautions
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including mammograms, Pap smear, and blood pressure may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY AFFECT CERTAIN LAB TEST RESULTS. Make sure your doctors and laboratory personnel know you are using this medicine. YOU SHOULD PERFORM monthly self-breast exams and receive yearly breast exams from your doctor while you are taking this medicine. Report any lumps to your doctor immediately. Talk with your doctor if you are unsure how to properly perform a self-breast exam. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you will be confined to a chair or bed for a long period of time (such as a long plane ride, bedrest, or having surgery). You may need to stop this medicine 4 to 6 weeks beforehand. Talk to your doctor about the safe use of this medicine if any of these conditions apply to you. FOLLOW THE DIET AND EXERCISE PROGRAM GIVEN TO YOU BY YOUR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER. Talk to your doctor about whether you should take a calcium and vitamin D supplement while you use this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE dark skin patches on your face (melasma). Exposure to the sun may make these patches darker. If patches develop, consult your doctor about the use of sunscreen or protective clothing when exposed to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths. THIS MEDICINE MAY INCREASE THE RISK of stroke, heart attack, blood clots, high blood pressure, or similar problems. The risk may be greater if you smoke. IF YOU WEAR CONTACT LENSES and you develop problems with them or with your vision, contact your doctor as soon as possible. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. FOR WOMEN: DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you are pregnant. IF YOU SUSPECT THAT YOU COULD BE PREGNANT, contact your doctor immediately. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby. IF YOU HAVE DIABETES, this medicine may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.
Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while you are taking this medicine include back pain; breast tenderness or pain; mild hair loss; diarrhea; headache; nausea; stomach cramps, bloating, or pain; vaginal spotting or breakthrough bleeding; vomiting; or weight changes. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience irritability; nervousness; swelling of the hands or feet; or unusual vaginal discharge, itching, or odor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience leg or calf pain, swelling, or tenderness; chest pain; confusion; discharge from the nipples; fainting; irregular heartbeat; lumps in the breast; mental or mood changes (such as depression or memory loss); numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; severe, persistent, or recurring abnormal vaginal bleeding; severe or persistent dizziness, headache, or stomach pain; severe or persistent breast pain; speech changes (such as slurred speech); sudden severe nausea or vomiting; sudden shortness of breath; sudden unusual weight gain; vision changes (such as double vision or loss of vision); or yellowing of eyes or skin. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

If you take too much
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include severe or persistent nausea or vomiting, or severe or unusual vaginal bleeding.
Additional information
If you are taking this medicine to prevent osteoporosis, it is important to have enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist if you have questions about your diet or about taking dietary supplements such as calcium or vitamin D. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
